Fly fishing legend Hywel Morgan has called for NHS Wales to follow England’s lead and start prescribing angling instead of anti-depressants to those battling mental health issues.

The charismatic Welshman has won numerous international titles and made regular TV appearances.

Hywel is well aware of fishing’s therapeutic qualities, and now wants NHS Wales to recognise the sport as a treatment to improve mental health.

“Every angler knows that when you go fishing, the world stops,” he said.

“You forget about the stresses of life, and it’s a great way to relax. In England, several health authorities are prescribing courses of angling instead of anti-depressants, with organisations like Tackling Minds doing a fantastic job and proving very, very successful in helping people with depression.”
