Perfect rudd rewards hours of searching

So far this season, Sam Smith has been exploring stretches of river in the Fenland area of East Anglia, close to where he lives, in the hope of catching a 3lb-plus rudd.

After many miles walked, his efforts were finally rewarded recently when this fine 3lb 4oz specimen took his bread hookbait. Having spotted a few good fish, he got them competing for free offerings, and once they were feeding confidently, made his first cast.

It wasn’t long before one of the larger fish took the bait, and after a good fight Dan had the fish he was after safely in the net.
