After an unsuccessful previous few winters fishing the rivers, George Shorten turned his attention to a large reservoir, one that’s home to huge perch.
His arrival coincided with overcast conditions and south-westerly winds, although water levels remained low after the dry summer.
The day passed quietly for George, but an hour before he and his friend had to head back to shore, he felt a hard thud on the rod-tip as his 7cm shad fished on a drop shot rig was taken.
The fish stripped line from his reel, making George wonder at first if he’d hooked a pike. But after a short fight, this big perch broke surface. At 5lb 4oz, it certainly made the long drive home less of a chore!
