Chub can sometimes be to barbel anglers what bream are to carp anglers — a bit of a nuisance, often getting to the bait before the intended species. However, that isn’t always a bad thing, as it can lead to catching some really big fish, even if they weren’t the original target.
Jedd Hughes was the latest angler who was more than happy to catch one of the 'nuisance fish' in his swim. On a recent trip to the river he managed to land a personal best chub, even though he had been hoping to connect with a big barbel instead.
“On my first ‘proper’ barbel session of the season, I headed to the Hampshire Avon. Conditions were overcast, with a cold mist settling in the evening progressed.
“I cast out a boilie, wrapped in matching paste, and with a small PVA bag of freebies, to a gravel run between dying reedbeds. This was fished on a fluorocarbon hooklink and a 2oz inline lead.
“I had one bite that evening, from this 6lb 11oz chub. While not the intended species, I was pleased with the new personal best.”
