If there is one thing better than fishing, it is introducing someone else to the sport and watching them enjoy it as much as you do. Not only does this allow you to experience the excitement of seeing a new angler discover the things you might take for granted, but it also gives you someone to go fishing with!
Andy Harris has been angling for years, but recently his good friend and neighbour, Jez Sharp, asked if he could tag along, as he was looking for a new hobby after retiring.
“My neighbour, Jez Sharp, came fishing with me a year ago as an interested bystander looking for a new retirement hobby.
“We landed a few pike, including an 18-pounder. Jez was stunned that such fish lived in the canal system and was hooked on the idea of catching one himself.
“Since then, we’ve fished the small rivers and canals of South Yorkshire, with the latter being underrated for predator fishing.
“On a recent trip to the New Junction Canal, Jez landed a fish of 28lb 11oz on a sardine fished 1ft off-bottom. His PB was 14lb 4oz, so imagine his face when it was netted! His new best will certainly take some beating.”
