Monster Lea chub takes a homemade boilie hookbait

On a recent trip to the in-form Kings Weir section of the River Lea, Essex rod Peter Davies banked his own fish of a lifetime in the shape of a chub just 7oz shy of 9lb.

Arriving at dusk, he lightly baited three swims with homemade boilies and fished them in rotation.

“With no action in the first, I moved to the next and lowered my bolt rig into position," he told us.

"A few minutes later, the tip shuddered before pulling round.

"After bringing the fish to the surface, it made a few powerful runs before I got it under control. I couldn’t believe the size of it - it weighed 8lb 9oz."
