Mini boilies tempt tremendous Trent barbel

Despite much-needed rain hitting parts of the UK, the River Trent is still running fairly low, so on a recent day trip to the river at Gunthorpe, Dave Roberts dropped his hookbait size to catch this cracking 17lb 14oz barbel.

He presented a 12mm boilie on a size 12 hook to tempt what is the largest fish landed from the stretch this year and, interestingly, a ‘new’ barbel for the area. When he hooked it, the fish held deep and used its weight to its full advantage.

Initially Dave feared he may have hooked one of the river’s big carp, so was relieved to see the barbel surface in the foamy water! He landed five other barbel to 11lb 6oz in the same trip.
