An intrepid band of anglers has landed a stunning haul of 15 catfish – including three over 50lb – after going afloat and using fly fishing tactics.

Having booked a Norfolk lake for exclusive use, predator angler Babs Craig led a group including catfish-on-flypioneers Ollie Cullingford and Stuart Smith.

Catching cats on heavy fly tackle is not unheard of. But the group used float tubes to add further excitement and reach tricky spots.

“The fight is very different on the tube,” said Andy Eglon, who tamed a PB 44lb moggy on a 12-weight outfit.

“When you fish from the bank they run away from you, but when you’re directly above them they stay down and go around in circles.

“Bloody brilliant fun, and I think it’s also a less stressful fight for the fish.”
