Massive rudd landed on freelined bait

Although specimen fishing can be a waiting game, occasionally results can be gained in a short space of time, as Paul Brooks proved when he landed this 3lb 2oz rudd.

With a few hours spare after work, he decided to see if he could track down a few fish on a Fenland river. After finding a group of rudd, he spent time introducing freebies of bread until they were taking confidently. Using a piece of freelined sinking bread flake, Paul landed a 2lb 11oz fish soon after making his first cast, but its spirited fight spooked its larger shoal mates.

Not to be outdone, Paul had another cast, and as he watched his hookbait gently sinking, a big shadow emerged
from beneath a far-bank tree and engulfed the bait.

An epic fight followed as the fish tried every trick to get away. But after a stressful couple of minutes, Paul slid the ‘best-looking rudd he’d ever caught’ into the net. When it spun the needle of his scales round to 3lb 2oz, he was truly delighted.
