Lee Eusman made the most of a week away in East Yorkshire, targeting a deep gravel pit at short range for its resident rudd. “I knew it was eighteen foot deep,” he said. “So there was no reason to chuck far.”
Tackle was deliberately simple, combining a 10ft feeder rod with 6 lb mainline, a size 16 to a 4lb hooklength and a small maggot feeder. Lee opted to clip up short to a slightly shallower spot he found, which helped improve casting and allowed him to build a tighter column of bait in the deep water, keeping the rudd concentrated in one area.
These tactics paid off is fine style as Lee's best session of the week saw a four-hour purple patch where he put 34lb of rudd in the net.

Best fish of the week went 1lb 15oz, backed by three more at 1lb 13oz and several over a pound and a half, making for a really enjoyable days angling. However, Lee wasn’t done yet, and just as the session was winding down, the lake had one last surprise for him
“Just before dusk one evening the tip went and kept going, I struggled to stop the fish taking line” Lee said.
"A steady 40-minute battle followed before a cracking common of 24lb 6oz graced my net. It just proves, on balanced tackle, you can land pretty much anything you hook," Lee concluded.
