Much like anywhere in the world, where you live in the UK will determine what fish reside in your local waters to catch. Some areas of the country are better suited to certain species, and if you want to catch them you may have to travel, but how far is too far when pursuing the fish of your dreams?

In Jack Whateley's case, it would seem distance is no issue as he completed an 8-hour round trip on three occasions last year, racking up around 1500 miles in search of a giant perch, all to no avail. Thankfully, on his latest outing, he was rewarded with the huge perch he had hoped would grace his landing net.

“I live in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, and the other week I travelled to Cambridgeshire’s Grafham Water in search of perch.

“It’s a four-hour drive, and last year I visited on three occasions without finding the fish. But this time I caught a 4lb 4oz PB, which made up for my previous efforts. I fished a soft plastic creature bait, rigged ‘weedless’, with the hookpoint concealed by the lure.

“I also landed an 8lb zander during the same session. It came from the deeper water, and was my first ever example of the species.”
