Despite the wealth of tackle available, there’s a certain pleasure in catching fish using something you’ve made yourself, and David Pearson did just that when he caught grayling scaling 3lb 3oz and 3lb 2oz, plus three two-pounders, on an elder pith float he’d designed specifically for the Scottish river he was targeting.

He took the haul on maggot hookbaits during two days at the venue, which is over 200 miles from his home.
