Big rudd are generally targeted with float tactics or surface-fished baits in high summer, but this winter some predator anglers have been catching them while fishing for other species with lures! A hat-trick of three-pounders has been reported, along with a few ‘twos’, all the fish falling to small soft plastic lure patterns intended for perch.

Young Isaac Hammond enjoyed the best hit, landing rudd of 3lb 4oz, 3lb 2oz, 2lb 4oz and 2lb exactly on a trip to the Great Ouse.

“I was on my local stretch just before first light, targeting zander,” he said.

“I started fishing at 6.45am and soon hooked a decent zed, but it came off close to the bank, which was gutting.

“I then found a shoal of perch and picked away at them, landing several fish over the 30cm mark.”

Using a drop shot set-up with a 5cm pink imitation worm, Isaac then had a hard hit from something bigger.

“The fish pulled line from the reel, and after a great battle I landed a PB rudd of 2lb 4oz,” he added.

“I cast to the same spot again, and after another powerful hit and a long fight, landed an even bigger rudd at 3lb 2oz! I had one of 2lb exactly next cast, and 10 minutes later had the biggest of the lot at 3lb 4oz.”
