You can be forgiven for thinking that lures are only effective for the more predatory species that inhabit our waterways, such as pike and perch, as in the past, these have predominantly been the fish anglers target.
However, as lure fishing has become increasingly popular over the last decade, advancements in techniques and the wide availability of different lures have shown that nearly all our coarse fish species can be tempted by them.
This was perfectly demonstrated by lure fanatic Plamen Boyanov, who on a recent session on the Great Ouse, set out with every intention of catching a big perch, but was left utterly stunned when a giant 3lb 3oz rudd couldn’t resist the micro jig he was using.
HERE ARE SOME REALLY USEFUL TIPS TO HELP YOU CATCH MORE FISH ON LURES...

"The stretch we fished is well-known and heavily pressured, so we knew it wouldn’t be easy. I find on venues like this, going small often makes the biggest difference, and once again, the micro approach proved its worth," Plamen told us.
"The perch showed little interest in larger lures, so I switched to my ultralight setup and downsized to micro lures'" he added.
"The lightweight presentation allowed for a slow, fluttering fall, which I find perfect for imitating a sick or injured baitfish. It presents an easy meal for any predatory fish."
Plamen clearly had his tactics right, landing a few smaller perch in the first hour of the session. While he caught nothing of any size, it kept him enthusiastic, ensuring he was working his lure to the best of his ability. Continuing to cast to likely looking areas, it wasn't long before he was rewarded with an aggressive take as a much better fish smashed into his lure.
"Moments later, a flash of gold rolled in the current, and I realised this was no ordinary perch. When the fish finally slipped into the net, I was over the moon. Not only was it a new personal best, but it had taken one of my own handmade lures — a ProFishingUK Seeker Shad 35mm in pink," he said.
"The fish, a magnificent 3lb 3oz Rudd, was a moment I’ll never forget and what a way to catch it!"
