Pike often divide anglers on how well they fight, some note that they barely do anything at all when hooked, while others experience explosive battles where the pike uses all its speed and power to try and evade a trip to the bank.
Young Freddy Whitman certainly found himself at the more extreme end of the spectrum, as his first pike was certainly not in the mood to have its picture taken.
“I recently went pike fishing at Albyns Farm Lake, in Essex. Using a mackerel tail as bait, I was sitting on the edge of the bank when the bite alarm signalled a take. It was far from a subtle bite, as the rod was almost pulled off the banksticks!
“I grabbed it right away and hooked a fish that moved into open water in front of me, where it fought like a warrior. Eventually, we had it in the net, an 18lb specimen and my very first pike!”
