Angling textbooks tell us that using tiny baits and delicate rigs is the best approach if you want to catch a crucian – but last week a huge 4lb 7oz ‘cruey’ fell to a 15mm boilie fished on a size 6 hook!
Keely Greenhalgh was carp fishing at the Cherry Lakes complex when she hooked and landed the surprise specimen on a banoffee-flavoured bait presented over boilie crumb and sweetcorn.
The Cotswolds fishery is known to hold some very large crucians, and some anglers target them by design. Keely had her fish from Cherry Spring lake, and it’s believed to be the water’s new record for the species.
“I had a screaming take, just like a typical carp run, but when I lifted the rod I thought right away that it didn’t feel heavy,” she said.
“It was a dark and foggy night, and I could just feel it making subtle bumps down the line.”
Still unsure of the fish’s identity, her husband netted it and revealed that it was a crucian carp, and a good one at that!
“Although we caught a few big carp on the trip, the crucian definitely made a wet and cold weekend much better!” Keely added.

Keely rightfully overjoyed with her huge crucian!
