Fly fishing for predators has surged in popularity, and the patterns are so effective that some anglers are now using lure rods to cast them out!

Mike Pisera did exactly that on a recent trip to the Warks Avon, where he landed this 14lb 13oz zander after it took a fly measuring a foot long!

“I’ve had consistent success on flies when lures aren’t producing,” he told us.

“So, I rigged up a large 12-inch fly known as a ‘Mike’s Mauler’ on my heavy lure rod. It’s a pattern I have a lot of confidence in.”

“After a few hours, I hooked and landed two zander in 20 minutes, the first measuring 90cm and weighing 14lb 13oz, the second being a 62cm specimen.

“The results speak for themselves!” he added.
