Clever feeding trick helps bank impressive tench

Leicestershire angler Matthew Clayton, landed a fantastic fish of 11lb 15oz on his most recent session after trying a new baiting strategy. It was caught from a large midlands pit, where he targeted a spot around 80 yards out where there was light weed cover.

Although some anglers would hide away from such a spot in favour of something clearer, Matt has no problems in fishing over a bit of weed.

“The fish like it, and if you get your rigs right, you can present a bait over the stuff,” he explained.

“I fish an in-line lead, which I mould scalded pellets around. This can be cast over light debris and ensure good presentation, a bit like a Method feeder or a solid bag would,” he explained.

Matthew’s hookbait was a worm kebab – a favourite amongst many tench anglers these days. But whilst his hookbait was nothing unusual, his feeding approach was slightly unique.

“I like to feed little and often, having seen the way fish react to bait falling through the water on underwater films,” Matt revealed.

“But I’d forgotten my spomb on this trip, so had to regularly send the bait boat out to the spot to deposit a bit of feed!

“Thankfully, the effort paid off, and at around 6:45pm I had a screaming take and hooked what I knew was either a carp or a decent tench. You can’t print what I said to the dog when I saw the big tinca surface!”
