With the two species favouring similar areas and baits, Dean adjusted his tackle slightly to pick out the chub.

"Usually, I use a hooklink of around 18ins with a longish hair for barbel, but on this occasion I shortened it to 8ins and had the hookbait – a pellet - right against the hook," he told us.

“I was sat watching the rod-tip when it hooped over. Straight away, I thought I’d hooked a barbel, but after a short fight I had a chub in the net.

"I couldn’t believe the size of it when I first saw it, and knew right away it’d beaten my previous best of 6lb 10oz.

"At 7lb 3oz, it’s my first seven- pounder, and hopefully one I’ll meet again in the winter.”
