In Ireland, illegal fishing remains a prevalent issue, but a recent event raising awareness of sustainable angling practices is hoping to have an impact.
Problems ranging from organised poaching to using banned methods are having an impact on stocks, but Irish Anglers Against Poaching (IAAP) have just held a get-together on the grand Canal Docks in Dublin where Jordan Mathews – a passionate local angler – highlighted the importance of protecting waterways.
“It was all about promoting the values of catch and release, fish care and environmental respect,” he said.
“There was a great atmosphere, full of camaraderie and respect. Hopefully we can safeguard our fish stocks for future generations.”
