The last few weeks Surrey angler Michael Barnshaw has enjoyed some terrific perch sport on the River Thames, landing a trio of four-pounders topped by this 4lb 11oz specimen.

He’s been targeting a stretch of the river in Berkshire, using gudgeon and dace livebaits fished on float paternoster rigs.

Targeting deep marginal slack areas while there’s been extra water on, Michael has landed six fish over 3lb, but when he hooked the upper ‘four’, he knew he was connected to something in a different league.

In fact, he initially wondered if it was a pike, so when he saw the bold stripes and blood-red fins, he knew right away he’d hit the big-perch jackpot!
