Despite what we think we know about fishing, it has a habit of making us question decisions more frequently than many care to admit. As fish are wild creatures, they decide when to feed rather than when we think they should, and sometimes, even conditions we consider poor for fishing actually turn out to be some of our best days on the bank.
Paul Bailey found this out just last week, where at first glance, the river looked very out of sorts, yet it led to him banking his biggest chub from the venue at 6lb 14oz..
“When I arrived on the River Ure for a short evening session, things didn’t look good.
“It’d rained heavily the day before and the river had been high but, after checking with a friend who lives nearby, I was told that it was dropping but still carrying a ‘bit of colour’.
“That turned out to be an understatement – it was heavily coloured, but I decided to fish until I couldn’t see my quivertip.
“Using cheesepaste, I’d moved swims a dozen times before, as the light faded, I decided to try one more spot where there was a small back eddy.
“The bite came seconds after casting and, a few minutes later, I lifted a fat chub on to the bank. It’s a new venue best.”
