Sometimes, when you start on a new venue, you catch the fish of your dreams straight away, while other times they make you wait so long that you start to wonder if you’ll ever catch one. Despite Kings Weir’s reputation as a prolific venue for big barbel, it isn’t as easy as you might think, and although pictures of anglers holding fish from the venue appear regularly, the barbel there seldom give themselves up easily.
Eight years ago, Greg Dempster started fishing at King’s Weir on the River Lea, and he recently caught his first barbel from the venue in the shape of this 18lb 2oz stunner.
Fishing two small pieces of luncheon meat on a size 12 hook, a savage bite almost ripped his rod from the rest. With his rod bent double, Greg knew right away that he’d hooked a substantial fish.
After a hard fight, in which he steered the barbel out of several snags, he had the new PB in the net.
That was his only bite of the session, but with it being such a special fish, Greg certainly didn’t mind.
