Angler 'does not want record' after catching monster 5lb-plus rudd

Last week we received reports of a potential new British best 5lb 3oz rudd being caught by a lifelong angler whose own story is just as powerful as the fish is special.

It was banked by David Lavender, who has Parkinson’s disease and struggles to put in the effort required to catch specimen fish.

Tying knots is something he finds difficult, but that didn’t deter him from battling harsh conditions this spring to land what could be the largest rudd ever caught in this country.

It was taken on scaled-down carp tactics from a southern stillwater and, if verified, would smash Simon Parry’s current 4lb 10oz British record, but the history books aren’t something David is interested in.

“I don’t want any prizes for the fish, or any record,” he told us. “I just want to share the picture with other anglers. I’ve pushed my body to the limit, and this may well be the last year I am able to fish.”
