While Wales doesn't have an official record for carp, most agree the biggest known fish to have come from the country was a mirror caught from the Wharf Dock back in 2022, weighing 49lb.
As fish keep growing, it was really only a matter of time before Wales produced a bigger specimen, which is exactly what happened this week when a 49lb 15oz carp, believed to be the biggest ever caught in the country, was banked from the Llyn Cae Ty Nant Fishery near Tregaron in West Wales.
The superb mirror was caught by carp angler Peter Rees, who had been targeting the lake in question for the last three years. On his latest session, everything aligned for the 34-year-old, and the carp he so dearly wanted was finally laying in his net, the weight was just an added bonus on an already memorable capture.
"As I have a young family, my time on the bank is very limited, and despite this challenge, due to the tricky nature of the lake, I didn't let it stop me trying," Peter said.
"I had a rare two-day session ahead of me recently on my syndicate water, owned by Steve and Sioned Weeks, who have produced one of the best big carp fisheries in the country," he added.
"It just felt good for it, so I put a good helping of Baitworks Atlantic Heat boilies in, with the hope the fish were in a feeding mood."
"Thankfully, after all the effort I have put in, fishing as and when I can, it all came good, and I couldn't think of a better carp to have in my album."
