While trotting maggot on the River Forth, 15-year-old Cameron Binnie, from Stirling, caught one of the rarest fish in British waters – a shad.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes when this specimen of around a pound hit the net,” Cameron’s dad, Craig, told us.

“I’d only seen pictures of these in books. We released it immediately after taking a quick picture.

“The fish is one I’ll remember for a long time, and it was a privilege to see one up close.”

The pair believe it to be an allis shad, and while it’s tricky to tell the difference between these and the slightly more common twaite shad, it’s a remarkable capture either way.
