On a trip out with his dad, 13-year-old Harry Hayward landed one of the rarest ‘big fish’ in Britain – a clonking dace weighing 1lb 2oz!

He was fishing a tributary of the Thames with a swimfeeder, using a maggot hookbait and introducing liquidised bread and maggots, hoping for a few quality silvers.

“We’d been plagued by tiny roach, so he cast further downstream and into deeper water,” his dad, Duncan, told us.

“The tip tapped and he connected with what seemed a better fish. I waded out to pick it up, assuming it was a small chub, but when I realised it was a massive dace, I shouted to Harry to grab the net!”

Throwing his rod into the margins, Harry picked up the net and safely landed the prized fish.

“It dwarfed a few I caught here the previous week and is a phenomenal fish – he’s a jammy git!” Duncan added.
