When most anglers talk about fishing shallow the first baits that come to mind are pellets, casters and maggots - certainly not paste!

Using such a loose and sloppy hookbait off the deck sounds pretty much impossible but Andy Dyson has perfected a method to not only use it, but empty the lake with it!

Have you ever tried fishing paste shallow? You need to!

“If you fish paste in the correct manner, it can be a real winner in the upper layers of the water," he says.

“I’ve had bags of F1s to well over 100lb on it fishing just 12-18in deep and as with any style of fishing, feeding and presentation are the two things that you need to master to make it work.”

Groundbait choice

A product that mixes well into a paste and explodes upon impact with the water is essential. Andy relies on SonuBaits Super Crush Power Scopex.

Perfect shotting

Bites can come within a split second of the paste hitting the water. Place all of your shot directly under the float so that it cocks instantly to register those instant bites.

Keep it wet

If your paste becomes too dry, it won’t be as effective. Keep a tub of water on your sidetray and sprinkle a little on to your bait with your fingers when its consistency starts to wane.

Long lash

It’s imperative to swing your rig out as opposed to lowering it in. Having around 2ft of line between pole tip and float helps you do this. Keep it tight to prevent missed bites.

Swing the rig in

Perfect nugget

Make sure each ball of loosefed paste is the same size. This will help improve accuracy as you start to realise how much force you need when throwing it.

All in one

This is a fast-paced tactic where you’ll regularly replace the hookbait. Have your rollers set so that you can ship back and grab the rig without having to take the top kit off.
