Try these explosive breadsticks in your fishing

Bread is a great bait right through the year, highly visible, with a taste that fish like, yet not very filling, bread will attract and keep them feeding.

Lets look at one of my favourite tactics and just how easy it is to get creative one of the most effective baits that I know. All you need is a loaf of sliced white bread. My favourite brand is Warburtons, as the bread has quite a dense texture and holds together well. One loaf is enough for a day’s fishing and gives you loads of bait options.

Explosive sticks

One of my favourite ways to use bread is in PVA sticks. This tactic works great for carp and bream, but is just as useful for chub and roach on rivers too. Bread will explode out of a stick as it takes on water and expands, creating a cloud of particles around the hookbait.

Because the fine particles of liquidised bread have little substance they won’t fill the fish up, despite being very attractive. Start off by liquidising the white flake from a loaf. You can also add a small amount of the more buoyant crust if you want more particles to cloud the water column. I like a fine mix with few larger particles, as this will not fill the fish up quite so quickly.

You can use the liquidised bread as it comes, but I often flavour and colour it, as it is so easy to customise. Liquidised bread is the perfect carrier for concentrated powdered additives, such as liver powder, or squid powder, which can otherwise be difficult to use.

Add a teaspoonful of the additive to a liquidised loaf in a large airtight bag and shake well. The powder will be absorbed on to the surface of the bread, giving a controlled release. Powdered dyes can be added to liquidised bread in the same way. Half a teaspoonful of dye will give a vivid colour to the bait, especially if you leave it overnight for the dye to be fully absorbed into the bread particles.

How to make breadsticks

1 of 5

Remove the crusts, liquidise half a loaf, then place the resulting crumbs in an airtight tub.

2 of 5

Next, add half a teaspoonful of your favourite powdered bait dye and any flavours you like to the bread.

3 of 5

Leave the bait overnight to allow time for the dye and additives to be fully absorbed.

4 of 5

Compress a good pinch of the dyed and flavoured liquidised bread into some narrow PVA mesh.

The PVA sticks should be about 2cm long. Thread them on to the hooklength and hide the hook in the end of the stick.
