Nytro Marvelist Power Method 10ft review: Compact but powerful
Dan Webb puts the Nytro Marvelist Power Method 10ft through its paces on the bank, testing its casting ability, fish-playing performance and suitability for Method feeder fishing. Despite its compact size, this powerful rod handles big carp, heavy feeders and long-range casts with ease.

Regular readers of Angling Times will know I recently visited the Nytro trade show with my friend and colleague, Tony Grigorjevs.
As you can imagine, these are great events to attend, as not only do you get a good look at all the exciting new gear soon to arrive in shops, but you get to chat directly with the people who have designed and tested it.
While I was tanked up on free coffee and buzzing a little more giddily than normal, Nytro’s media manager, Emma Pickering, showed us their brand new Marvelist range of Power Method rods. I heard the name and my thoughts instantly translated them into a vision of long, powerful and brutish distance rods. When I was handed a mere slip of a rod, just 10ft long, I did a double take – I’d definitely surpassed my caffeine limit!

In a bid to stall for time as I confirmed the name on the blank, I let out a kind of ‘ohhh’ sound, followed by the words: “I was expecting a distance rod”.
Looking a little concerned, Emma reassured me that it was still very powerful.
Not really knowing what to say next, I blurted out that I should fish with it. That wasn’t actually a bad idea, as we were at Baston Lakes, a venue well associated with the words ‘power’ and ‘Method’.
My gear was in the van, and Tony had a camera.
Disappointed that he had to down his coke, I dragged Tony out to the lake. After a full-on morning of chatting gear and absorbing information on an extensive array of new products, we needed the fresh air anyway.

After sitting down on a vacant peg and allowing the sobering cool air to take effect, I took a closer look at the rod. At 10ft, I had the middle-length model of the trio. Slim to medium in diameter, with 2.9mm quiver tips and lined with surprisingly thin and lightweight guides, it still wasn’t saying ‘power’ to me.
Tony was too busy worrying about what refreshments we might potentially be missing out on back at the show to be of any help.
After a quick two-hour blast which included three carp into double figures as well as a couple of pesky skimmers, I finally understood what this rod was about. It might look modest, but it is actually outrageously powerful.

Being short in length, I could easily and accurately get my feeder to land with a satisfying plop on a 30m cast, yet the extra power also allowed me to cast over 70m when I opened it up. The danger with trying to reach those sorts of distances with a ‘standard’ rod is obviously breakages – too soft a quiver tip results in frap-ups.
Although not quite distance style, the tips are relatively quick-actioned to prevent this. Add to this the power in the blank and the lightweight guides – both of which speed recovery on the cast – I didn’t feel like I was even getting close to having an accident.
I think this is what Nytro were trying to achieve with this rod – something with plenty of casting power and grunt to tackle big fish and reach the distances they live at, but without the clumsy and bulky nature that you get with a distance-style rod.

Happy as I was using the Power Method at a venue like Barston, there is a downside. Extra power means you need to use decent-sized hooks and strong line – standard summer carp gear for most anglers. This isn’t a rod for scaling down to catch a few skimmers or F1s in winter. It’s a bagging tool! Speaking of bags, it would be ideal for use with PVA bags too, which require heavier leads and powerful casts to overcome their lack of aerodynamics.
Something else to know about this rod is that it suits a powerful cast. To get the payload to go where you want, you do need to give it a bit of whack to load the blank correctly. A gentle lob won’t really cut it.
I think there is a lesson to be learned here… be careful with your preconceptions. The Marvelist Power Method rods are the ideal tools for the angler targeting big fish on open waters where a range of distances might be required throughout the day. As for Tony, he now knows to make the most of complimentary refreshments, as you never know when you’ll get dragged off to photograph a Live Test!

BANKSIDE TEST VERDICT
+ Lightweight and easy to handle without the cumbersome and bulky feel you often get with beefed-up rods
+ Suited to big carp and other large fish on open waters using Method feeders or PVA bags
+ Plenty of power and great recovery means it can be pushed far harder on the cast than many comparable rods
- A powerful, positive cast is required even for shorter distances to compress the blank and remain accurate
- You might need to swap to a lighter-actioned model for smaller fish or when scaling down in the winter months
