REPORTS claiming that all field sports would be banned in Wales by 2024, angling included, have been categorically refuted by the Principality’s governing bodies.

Last week, a claim was made on social media that Welsh Government, together with Natural Resources Wales (NRW), were planning to prohibit fishing on their land. The rumours quickly gained traction, sparking outrage among the fishing community.

However, when we contacted NRW, its Principal Fisheries Advisor, Ben Wilson, was quick to dispel anglers’ concerns.

“This claim is completely false, and no such proposal has been made,” he told us. “Angling and anglers play an important role in protecting and championing the Welsh environment, as well as providing a significant boost to the economy.”

He added: “NRW remains committed to supporting the angling community, improving fisheries and securing a sustainable future for the sport.”
