A new TV series highlighting the historical failures of British water companies has received rave reviews.
Dirty Business, starring Jason Watkins and David Thewlis, hit the nation’s screens last week when its first episode was aired on Channel 4.
The ‘docudrama’ follows two neighbours in the Cotswolds who notice murky water in the previously clear River Windrush. Together, they explore the issue and, when the explanation given by the local water company doesn’t add up, they investigate further.
Based on a true story, the series has received five-star ratings from many national papers. It’s hoped that it will take public awareness of the issue to another level.
To promote Dirty Business, Channel 4 commissioned the creation of ‘The Fountain of Filth’ on London’s South Bank. The 10m-wide creation features bronze statues of men, woman and children appearing to vomit brown water in reference to the experiences of those made ill by exposure to untreated sewage. Above them, stands a business executive, with pockets and a briefcase filled with cash – a symbol of the failing water companies.
