Trust seeks to broaden the lure of fishing

A GROUP of Bangladeshi, Chinese and Pakistani ladies recently got their first taste of angling as part of the Angling Trust’s ‘We Fish as One’ campaign.

Assisted by expert coaches on the Bristol Avon, the participants used mainly pole tactics to land a stream of fish... once a familiar hurdle had been overcome.

“We had a brilliant turnout, and everyone had a fantastic time,” reported Southern Angling Development Manager, Dean Asplin.

“There was some resistance to handling maggots at first, but that went out of the window and everyone caught.”

Dean and colleagues are hosting another Bristol event on November 13. The Trust is also seeking to entice fresh volunteers by helping would-be coaches to get their badges. It’s all part of a drive to diversify the appeal of fishing, with further sessions across the country planned for 2022.
