Although we know pike on trout reservoirs are more than happy to take large deadbaits and hit big lures, their inquisitive nature can sometimes see them caught on the smallest of imitations.
On a recent session, angler David Shipman had a real shock when his fly, no more than two inches long and intended for trout, was intercepted by this massive pike.
“While out trout fishing on Grafham Water I hooked something huge on a damsel fly pattern.
“After about 20 minutes, I got a glimpse of this massive pike, and 10 minutes later managed to land it! Sadly, I didn’t have any scales, but I’ve caught pike to 20lb before and I guess that this fish was 25lb-30lb.
“It was in immaculate condition and looked as if it had never been caught before. We also had 25 trout and a 4lb perch on what was a really great day’s sport.”
