While it’s not unusual to catch pike with a fish down their gullet, you can imagine the surprise of specimen ace Dai Gribble, who recently discovered a moorhen! The telltale feet were poking out as he unhooked a low double, which was part of a six fish haul.

Dai was amazed to see the moorhen’s feet sticking out of the pike’s gullet!
“You wouldn’t be surprised to see this in summer when young birds are around, but at this time of year it must have been fully grown. The pike wasn’t even that huge, at just under 13lb!”
Although pike are well-known for their propensity to take frogs, rodents, and waterbirds besides fish, it’s a fairly rare occurrence for anglers to see adult birds grabbed, or indeed for them to turn up semi digested!
