A REMARKABLE silverfish match took place last month, when 21 anglers shared a catch of 1,216lb – most of which were great big roach.

Fishing at Suffolk big-fish water Homersfield Lake, winner on the day was Chelmsford angler Andy Moss, who weighed in 93lb 10oz, pipping four-time world champion, Bob Nudd, into second on 90lb 10oz.

Numerous redfins over 2lb were caught. Winner Andy, who fishes for top match side Browning Hotrods, and used both waggler and pole tactics, ranks the catch as one of his greatest ever.

“We knew the fishing would be good, but we didn’t expect it to be quite this good!” he said.

“I fished the waggler 4ft deep in 8ft of water, loosefeeding maggots, and the pole around 9m out on the deck, fishing corn and caster. I got through lots of bait – six pints of maggots in total!

“With so many fish present there was no need for finesse, so on the waggler line I used 3lb Maxima, a 0.12mm bottom and a size 16 hook.”

Alternating between the two lines, Andy kept bites coming all day.

“The fishing never slowed down, and I was netting roach close to the 1lb mark every cast. I also had around 15lb of skimmers, and I’d say four of the roach were very near, if not slightly over, the 2lb mark,” he added.

The match was organised by Jeanette Halliday, manager of Angling Direct Beccles. Its aim, as well as raising money for charity, was to remove some of the roach from the lake for fishery manager, Martin Symonds.

“We’re predominantly a specimen carp lake, but over the years all species have grown to considerable sizes,” Martin told us.

“Any surplus roach or bream I have, I can offer to other fisheries and clubs. We also raised £600 for charity on what was a great day for all.”
