A rising and coloured river can often be the kiss of death when lure fishing, but when it comes to zander, such conditions can actually be favourable – as James Murray proved when he landed this 15lb 8oz ‘zed’ from the River Severn recently.
Fishing from a boat with a friend, James rigged up a jig fly and began targeting slack water areas. The pair caught a few small fish early on, before they reached a much larger slack, where James cast to the margin and was jigging his lure close to the bottom when he felt a huge thud through the rod.
Initially, the fish just swam with the flow, at which point his mate told him that he’d hooked something small and to stop messing around!
However, James knew it was a good one, and line soon started stripping from his reel as the fish made a powerful run. With it giving such a strong fight, James wondered if he’d hooked a big pike, and so when the huge zander surfaced, the two friends looked at each other in awe!
