During a grayling fishing session on a southern chalk stream, Andrew Wells changed tactics after spotting a big barbel and ended up catching this huge specimen of 16lb 1oz. The Dorset angler was fishing the Lower Itchen fishery with a few mates, and started the day by trotting maggots.
“I landed lots of grayling but, to be honest, it got a little bit boring,” he told us.
“In one spot, I spied a big barbel in the clear water, so, after lunch, I grabbed a tip rod and a bit of luncheon meat to try and catch it.”
“On the first cast I caught an eel, and on the next, I thought that I’d hooked another one, before the fish went mental, and I knew it was a barbel! It was a really great end to the day.”
