Primal Mentality CIC, a Merseyside-based community interest company, has launched the Reel Healing Project, a pioneering programme that blends fishing with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to help children, young people, and adults manage their mental health in a practical, nature-based setting.

Delivered by trained facilitators at local waters, the sessions use angling-themed activities and metaphors to help participants better understand and manage their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. The project focuses on building emotional resilience, reducing anxiety, and creating a supportive space where mental wellbeing is prioritised alongside learning a new skill.

But it doesn’t stop at the water’s edge. The Reel Healing Project also teaches participants to respect and care for their environment. Sessions include community clean-ups around local waters and educational discussions on aquatic ecosystems, sustainability, and the importance of protecting wildlife habitats. Participants are encouraged to take pride in their local spaces and develop a long-lasting connection with nature.

Founder Chris Jervis said:

“Fishing is more than a hobby, it’s a tool for healing, reflection, and connection. We’re creating a safe, inclusive space for people to improve their mental health while learning how to care for themselves and the world around them.”

The project has already received referrals from community mental health teams, schools, and family support organisations. With growing demand, Primal Mentality CIC is keen to raise awareness of the project’s impact and build partnerships that help bring this work to more communities across the UK.
