THE newly-formed Chequers AC, based just outside Bristol, is launching a £3,000 river match this summer, open to anglers of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

The event, to be known as the South West Angling Championships, is the brainchild of club member Ben Rendall, who said:

“I’m 42, and on most of the matches I fish I’m the youngest there.

“Commercial fisheries can be intimidating places, while river clubs are, in my experience, far more friendly. So I’ve created this new event on the Bristol Avon that’s open to anglers of all abilities.

“There’s £3,000 up for grabs, which will hopefully attract plenty of participants. The main aim is to get people out on the banks, where new friendships will be formed and people will rediscover the joys of belonging to a local angling club – sadly, such clubs are a dying breed these days.”
