The River Thames is one of Britain’s best rivers for specimen fish of all species, and although it can be challenging, the rewards are certainly there for the taking.
For some anglers, it can take years to locate the better fish that inhabit its flowing waters, while others seem to stumble straight onto a winning formula, catching big fish from their very first session.
Simon Ashmead was one such angler, who after joining a new club, managed to bank some fantastic stipey's on his first trip to a new stretch of the river.
“This winter, I’ve taken up perch fishing with my son, Jack. After joining a club that has a stretch of the Thames, we made a first visit. I fed some chopped worms and maggots, and over the top I fished a prawn popped up around 10ins off the bottom.
“Within an hour, the bobbin rose and, after a 10-minute battle, I had a perch of 4lb 3oz in the net! The next week I visited again for a few hours in the evening. Using the same tactics, I added another big perch weighing 4lb 1oz!”
