Aside from the huge reservoirs that have slightly skewed how we view big perch, smaller stillwaters across the country still contain some real giants. Any perch over 4lb is truly impressive, and anything breaking the 5lb barrier is the catch of a lifetime, as such, there are very few venues capable of producing fish of that calibre.
One of the most well-known of specimen perch resided at Crawford Lakes in Devon, growing to well over 5lb and smashing the personal best's of those anglers lucky enough to catch it. As with all things, nothing lasts forever, and sadly, the fish that made so many anglers’ dreams come true passed away from natural causes this week.
On a post to Facebook Clawford lakes had this to say:
"It is with great sadness we announce that our enormous perch from Lodge Lake has passed away of natural causes."
"This fish was a true Clawford legend which graced many of our guest's nets over the past 3 ½ years and created so many amazing memories and of course PB’s! We have been truly grateful to have had such a specimen for people to angle for – a proper fish of a lifetime and a legacy that will live on with us."
"The good news is we have quite a few other perch that are around the 4lb mark in a few different lakes and we are hopeful soon of another 5lb+ specimen."
