Although many anglers often think that trout fishing is all about fly fishing, there are many more ways to catch these aggressive fish. Trout, especially the bigger specimens, are incredibly predatory and have been reported eating everything from frogs to mice, and it's this instinct that a growing fraternity of anglers are capitalising on by using lures to catch this impressive species.
Alexandru Stoica is one such angler who loves lure fishing various rivers and streams throughout the UK in search of huge wild trout, and on his most recent session he landed this massive brown trout from a small Welsh river.

"I’ve been targeting a few of the wilder rivers and streams in Wales recently in search of big trout and have caught some impressive fish, but this recent capture was one to remember," Alex told us.
"I love to use really light gear when I go fishing. My preferred trout setup consists of a 10g-rated lure rod, a 1000-size reel, Daiwa Tournament Evo x8 braid (0.08mm), and a 0.22mm fluorocarbon leader," he added.
After fishing for a while, Alex had banked a few smaller brown trout to keep him interested, but he hadn’t connected with anything of note. Moving swims, he found a much better looking area with a deeper pool that he felt seemed far more likely to hold a big trout.

"I had a few casts in the new swim, and just as I was about to lift my 5cm Mustad Scurry Minnow out of the water, it got slammed by a huge trout," Alex recalled.
"I held on tight as the fish stripped braid off my reel and made its way out into the fast water."
"Despite my best efforts to land the fish quickly, it really beat me up, shooting upstream like a train three times before I finally got it safely into the net."
"After letting it rest, I got the trout out for a few pics, and what an impressive fish it was. At over 60cm, it was in perfect condition and was definitely the one I was hoping to catch."
"As with all my trout, I revived her in the flow, and she went back to fight another day," he concluded.
