Massive F1 carp is potentially the biggest ever landed

The F1, F1 carp, F1 hybrid, however you want to refer to them, has become a staple in match fisheries over the last decade. Their willingness to feed, rapid growth rate, and resilience to disease, has cemented them as firm favourite among both anglers and fishery owners alike.

The fish is a hybrid cross between a common carp and a crucian carp. When they were originally bred, it was believed they wouldn't exceed 5lb in weight, however, in recent years, we’ve seen them surpass double figures. Chris Davies is one angler who can testify to the impressive sizes these fish are now reaching as he recently banked what may be the biggest F1 ever recorded at Old Hough Fishery in Cheshire, weighing in at a staggering 13lb 13oz.

"I was fishing a Fish Midlands Qualifier at Old Hough Fisheries on their Big Max Lake, which is home to an array of different species," Chris told us.

"On the day I was using the pole at 16 metres, pinging pellets over the top, as it can be a successful method at this venue," he added.

"During the match, I landed a colossal F1, which I initially thought was a carp due to its sheer size. I have never seen one anywhere close to this."

"At the end of the match, I couldn't wait to see what it weighed and Melvin Sykes, the fishery manager, agreed it was the largest F1 he had ever witnessed, with the scales confirming it at 13lb 13oz."
