AN ANGLER has banked a staggering 881lb 5oz of fish in five hours to smash the match record at a well-known northern complex.

John Foster was fishing peg 1 on Bowes Lake at County Durham’s Angel of the North Fishing Lakes, and landed a never-ending stream of carp averaging 10lb to fill 20 keepnets come the final whistle, comfortably clear of Alex Burton in second place, who landed an almighty 606lb of fish himself.

Fishery owner Ann Adlington told us more about the astonishing catch.

“John makes a paste from our Angel Lakes pellets and brings a football-sized lump of it,” she says.

“He caught at his feet, and needed help lifting his nets out and was still shattered the next day! John caught over 900lb but went over on a few of his nets, so we had to knock him back!”
