A GLOBAL lure fishing event, ‘The Big Lerf’, went down a storm, and In the UK alone 61 species were caught, including rare Couch’s bream, turbot and even gudgeon. European and US anglers added to a 157 overall total.

“It’s all about variety, and it’s a great excuse to catch as many species as you can,” said Plymouth-based organiser Ben Bassett.

“It’s growing massively – and just shows what’s possible.”

Tom Baron won the junior section with 10 species, while Will Pender took the award for most fish on ‘hard’ lures, with 20 species, all on metals.

Votes are still coming in for the most unusual catch, with clingfish and even a stone loach among the entries.
