Sometimes all the planning in the world goes into a session and despite lining up the weather, the location and the species, the trip turns out to be a complete failure. Then there are other times, when as anglers, we just grab the rods to get out as we have an hour spare, and very often it is these impromptu sessions lead to some exceptional moments on the bank.
Just this week, Chris Lambert finished work a little earlier than usual, so he decided to head down to his local River Severn to catch the last hour of light with his son. This turned out to be the best decision he might ever make in regards to his pike fishing, as he went on to bank this monster 30lb 8oz croc on his first cast.
“I embarked on a last-minute trip to the river with my 13-year-old son, Frankie. Pike were the target, and we were set up by around 4.30pm.
“Just 20 minutes after casting out a float-legered mackerel deadbait, the rod screamed off.
“The place we were fishing is known for being snaggy and, at first, it felt like I’d hooked the bottom. But then, ‘the bottom’ woke up, and what followed was a phenomenal fight.
“By the time we’d landed the fish it was dark, but it was clear that it was something special.
“It was unlike any other pike I’ve caught in over 20 years of targeting them. I’d never even had a ‘twenty’!”
