WITH summer finally drawing to a close, most anglers are turning their attentions away from crucian carp, but not species fanatic Matt Fernandez, who decided to have one last crack at them last week and walked away with a new personal best weighing in at 4lb 4oz.

Fishing an undisclosed southern pit, Matt had recently endured a run of tough, fruitless sessions before he finally managed to get into an area of the pit which he fancied might produce the goods.

After Spombing out a bed of hemp, casters, pellets and groundbait, he cast two Method feeders over the top with fake caster hookbaits.

A few hours later he received a take on his left-hand rod and was into what he knew was a decent crucian. He admitted to ‘praying hard’ as he played it, having lost two good fish on the previous session.

This time, luck was on his side, and a nearby angler was on hand to help net the fish. Matt then added another crucian of 3lb 12oz that took just as he landed the four-pounder.
