Although boilies are primarily used to catch carp, over the last decade species such as barbel have shown a clear preference for these baits too, with anglers up and down the country adopting them to target specimen fish.
While on a recent session on the River Trent, James Rabjohns was attempting to catch a carp, but instead was rewarded with this “nuisance” barbel, which smashed his PB in the process.
“The River Trent has yet again been very kind to me, this time in the form of a 17lb 4oz barbel.
“While I’m predominantly fishing for carp, I know there’s always the chance of a bonus big barbel at this time of year.
“I think they drop down from the weirs, where they spend the warmer months, looking for slacker water to hold in as the river shifts up and down.
“A Dynamite Baits Complex-T boilie was the successful hookbait, and the fish smashed my barbel PB by a clear 3lb.
“Its frame was immense, and every scale and fin was in perfect order.”
