A THREE-POUND rudd from anywhere in the UK is a special fish, but one from the cool waters of Yorkshire is a truly rare catch.
Darren Starkey managed the remarkable angling feat when he banked this 3lb 1oz specimen from a stillwater in the north of the county which he’d been told held some big fish.
After feeding small Dynamite Baits floating pellets, to begin he was plagued by tiny rudd. But just as he was about to give up, he saw a bow wave approach his loosefeed. Casting his pellet waggler and breadcrust hookbait into its path, the little fish pecked at his bait before the crust disappeared and the bow wave vanished. Darren guessed his hookbait had started to sink, but then his float suddenly buried and he struck into the impressive golden-flanked rudd.
